Standard DTI FAQs
You find the bolt rolls or turns in the hole while you are tightening and your're not sure whether that's OK
If the rolling of the bolt has the effect of polishing or grinding off the tops of the DTI bumps, rather than just compressing them, then it's not OK. On the other hand, if the bolt rolls and the DTI doesn't experience any such grinding down, then it is OK. For instance, when the DTI is put on the nut end of the bolt, and the nut is driven, it doesn't matter that the bolt rolls in the hole. What matters is whether the flat washer on top of the DTI (and under the turning nut) turns and grinds down the DTI bumps. It often does not, even though the bolt itself rolls.
