Squirter® DTI FAQs
What to include in Inspection Test Plans (ITPs)
Steel erectors have to prepare "Inspections and Test Plans" which cover
all
their work. Much of that "ITP" covers bolting. As well as all the
correct
ITP clauses having to do with receiving bolts, storage, tightening
equipment, and QA procedures, when erectors contemplate using Squirter® DTIs
they
should ammend their ITP to include specific Squirter® procedures.
Here are a few draft paragraphs which can be used in an "Inspection and
Test
Plan" to allow for the use of Squirter® DTI's:
You should include the following:
1. Squirter® DTI's will receive a "pre-installation verification" test
in a
Skidmore/Wilhelm bolt tension calibrator per RCSC.
2. Squirter® DTI's will further be calibrated on site in the same
Skidmore
device as follows, with all workers present, and with a field technical
representative of Applied Bolting being present:
(a) Five (5) samples taken to 20% over RCSC minimum bolt tension and
squirted volume and appearance of silicone noted.
(b) Five (5) more samples are tensioned to the same apparent squirt
volume
and appearance while the Skidmore is covered.
(c) In the steelwork, the Squirter® DTI's are tightened to the same
apparent squirt appearance, and checked with a feeler gage of the
correct
thickness.
3. In the steelwork, Squirter® DTI's shall be assembled on the bolts
only
over standard sized holes unless special flat washers are provided.
4. In the steelwork, all bolts must be snugged and the plies brought
into
firm but not necessarily continuous contact on the first pass without
allowing the Squirter® DTIs to fully squirt. After snugging the joints,
starting
from the most rigid point in the connection, all bolts are to be fully
tightened to the point where the Squirter® DTI's indicate correct
tension.
5. Feeler gage inspection of fully tightened and squirted Squirter®
DTI's
should be at the discretion of the EOR and project steelwork inspectors
on
site. This frequency is normally about 50% of all bolts in the first
few
hundred, then progressively less frequent as the inspector becomes
comfortable that the Squirter® DTI's are correctly compressed.
