Squirter® DTI FAQs
Hot and Cold Weather - Do Squirter® DTIs Work OK?
The Silicone in a Squirter® DTI has an operating Temperature of -60*F to +200*F, at least in theory. In practice, we have tested the lower temperatures as low as -40*F and found the squirt worked correctly.
On the upper end of the temperature scale with an ambient temperature of 110*F and the surface of the steel at 140*F the squirt feature also functioned correctly.
High or low temperatures do not affect the squirt event as the silicone used is cured and will eject from under the bump in a predictable manner, part-to-part. The "Squirt Event" may be a little different at plus 50 degrees celcius compared to what it is at minus 50 degrees celcius, but it will still be useful as an indicator of bolt tension. Applied Bolting asks the bolt installers to calibrate the squirt event before beginning bolting work so the workers know how much squirted silicone will correspond to correct bolt tension. Silicone will begin to appear at bolt tensions below minimum, but Applied Bolting explains that this is necessary to give the bolting workers time to get off their wrench as the bolt tension reaches the desirable range. When finished, the appearance and amount of squirted silicone must be at least what was shown to be necessary in the calibration exercise.
