You have ASTM A490 bolts and ASTM F959 DTI's made to the compatible A490 grade. You have been asked to mechanically galvanize all the hardware including the DTI's.What should you do?
Do not galvanize the A490 bolts and DTI's, at least not without very special precautions approved by the Engineer-of-Record. Delayed fracture stemming from hydrogen embrittlement is a possible failure mechanism if zinc is applied over an acid etched base. While it is possible to mechanically zinc coat this type of hardware,it is probably better and more secure to dacromet coat. (Dacromet Web Site)
