Standard DTI FAQs
Do DTIs affect the potential for preferential corrosion because of the small residual gap possibly left by the DTI bumps?
No. When the DTI has been closed to the point where a .005" feeler gage will not enter half way around the DTI, the extremely small residual gap which remains is bridged easily by all top coats of paint.
And this is not just Applied Bolting saying this. Millions of plain and galvanized and epoxy coated DTI's have been installed on bolts all over the world even in areas which are particularly susceptible to corrosion, like sea coast bridges, like chemical plants, etc. No preferential corrosion problems have ever been identified which resulted from the presence of a DTI on a bolt. In fact, some specifiers and owners report that they feel the additional assurance of high positive initial clamping force that DTI's provide keep the steel connection plies together better, through all kinds of loadings, and this in turn prevents the ingress of moisture between the plies of the steel.
