Standard DTI FAQs
When Bolts are tensioned using DTI's but designed to be used in shear do you have to reduce the allowable shear?
No. If you have "pre-tensioned shear/bearing" connections, under the Research Council rules, the bolts must be tensioned during installation, but at ultimate load after slip the bolt tension probably relaxes to near zero and therefore no reduction in shear value is necessary. For a description of when "pre-tensioned shear/bearing" connections are needed, see designer benefits, which is part of this web site.
