Standard DTI FAQs
Accuracy of torque wrench
Torque wrench inspection of bolts is meaningless when DTI's are used. Torque reproducibility within a LOT of bolts, much less within a mixed lot of bolting hardware consisting of different length bolts, nuts, flat washers, etc., has been reported to vary as much as +/- 30 percent. That is why the RCSC states very clearly that torque wrench inspection of bolts should be used ONLY as a method of last resort, and is very unreliable.
Crush the DTI after snugging the connection plates, and don't use a torque wrench. It's unnecessary work, and the values obtained are meaningless.
